Weakness and Strength of Picking Up Card Games

By: Misha Bolerikovsky

Cards is an ancient pastime that over the ages has only picked up popularity and fans. During childhood simple games such as War are explained and then used as a learning tools for helping totters appreciate the world of numbers. As people grow up they begin to play more complicated games that rely on strategy and skill to determine outcome. I have surveyed some of the more popular ones and compiled a list of the toughest and the easiest to learn.

List of Easiest Games to Study
1) War:
Here, all the cards are dealt out and each player, in turn, puts down a card from his pack. Note that since the deck in your hand faces the table, you do not see which card you are releasing. Once all the players have placed their respective card down, the highest card wins the round and takes all the cards that are on the table.

2) Catching the Cheater:
Maybe you might know of this game in a different name such as "Liar" or "Honesty is Not the Best Policy", but the method of playing is similar. The winner is the player who has managed to cheat the rest more than they succeeded in defrauding the rest. There are no rules but the game proceeds like so: depending on the number of players, anywhere between seven to thirteen cards are handed out and one is opened in the middle. Then, moving clockwise, each player announces what he is laying down. The others can catch him (if he lied), but whosoever is caught, must pick up all the cards that have been laid down on the playing desk.

3) Colour Scramble:
The colours are the issue in this pushover entertainment. Ranked so: Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, the object is to win over all the individual cards of one of the suits. You can do this by simply asking the player next to you. The trick in this game is to pick the one colour that you want, while others try and block your play. While one could us advance strategy, it is not required.

4) Three Card Monty:
Three Card Monty is a fun game and the rules could not be any easier. Three cards are placed on the table and the middle card is turned Face up. The card is then flipped over and the three cards are then shuffled. The object is to try to figure out which of the three cards is the card that was flipped over.

List of Most Difficult Games to Learn
1) Mandrake:
With extensive rules intertwined and conditioned to match different circumstances, Mandrake requires intense concentration as well as a highly tuned strategic outlook. All the cards are handed out, and the person with the 2 of Clubs starts. So far it is simple, but now it gets complex. The next player can either place an ace or a three, but these must be either of a different colour or if of the same colour then it must be accompanied by a trump card determined only for that round. The others can use this card or override it by crossing it with two Kings or a Queen and a Jack. There are many more rules, too many too mention here, so just pass over this game if anyone ever suggest teaching it to you.

2) Poker:
Texas Holdem, Caribbean Stud, Pai Gow Play: the version and variations going around for this one game are so numerous that if you would like to learn them, you would need to take a break from school, university or work and just sit and go over the different rules and regulations for each one. I know poker is popular, but it is too complicated to pick up. You need more than a few rounds to even play independently. I say, pass, unless you are truly motivated.

3) DOHH:
Dohh is a fun game. What makes it hard to play is that the looser gets a punch in the arm from the other players. An entire deck of cards is split evenly between the players. Each player turns over their top card. The player with the highest card gets to punch the player with the lowest card in the arm. The only way to win is to be the last person in the game. When the deck of cards has been gone thru the deck is reshuffled and dealt again. Until all players give up except one.
